xxxx Project

Introduction

For our HCI industry project, we collaborated with the "Salzburger Freilichtmuseum", a 50-hectare outdoor museum nestled in Großgmain, near Salzburg city. The museum's primary objective is to collect, reconstruct, furnish, and document original rural buildings from various regions of Salzburg (Flachgau, Tennengau, Pongau, Pinzgau, and Lungau), spanning from the 15th to the 20th century.
While performing very well in the area of sustainability, the Salzburger Freilichtmuseum encounters obstacles regarding accessibility and inclusivity. Due to its expansive natural terrain and the display of traditional buildings that were not originally designed with accessibility in mind, access to the museum's content can be challenging for individuals with disabilities, particularly those with mobility impairments. This is further compounded by the fact that exhibitions are typically housed on the first floor. While the installation of elevators would be too costly and disruptive, the museum is actively seeking alternative solutions to enhance accessibility.
We were initially tasked with creating a digital museum guide as an alternative means of accessing the museum's content, aiming to enhance accessibility and the general visitor experience.
Later in the project we collaboratively iterated on this brief, as research findings pointed away from the initially proposed technology “digital guide / app”.

Project plan

The project followed a typical user-centered design process with the phases research, ideation, design and evaluation being done iteratively.

Project Structure

Project Outcomes

Research findings: The museum can use these insights with further development to tackle the issues we found. Design directions: We ideated 6 different directions and possible outcomes which the museum can implement in future. Design deliverable 1: We created an analogue concept and prototype focusing on improving the museums' info signs and map through storytelling and playfully collecting stamps. This design solution was tested and can be implemented right away. Design deliverable 2: We created a second more digital concept that the museum can further develop and implement, fokusing on immersive storytelling through augmented reality.
